Major Arcana
The Devil
- attachment
- patterns
- temptation
- liberation
On the card
A horned, bat-winged figure crouches on a dark pedestal with an inverted star above its brow, while a man and a woman stand chained to the pedestal by loose collars they could slip off.
Upright
The Devil shines a light on what binds you – habits, attachments or beliefs that feel stronger than they really are. It is not a judgment but an invitation to see a pattern clearly. Notice that the chains on the card are loose: awareness is already the first step toward freedom.
Reversed
Reversed, the Devil can show a pattern beginning to loosen as you recognise what has been holding you. It may also point to smaller, quieter compulsions or blind spots that are easy to overlook. Be honest and gentle with yourself as you reclaim your choices.
- Love & connection
- In love, it invites you to notice intense attraction, jealousy or dependence, and to choose a connection that leaves both people free.
- Work & purpose
- At work, it can highlight ambition that drives you too hard, or a situation where you feel stuck but have more options than you think.
- A prompt for you
- Name one habit that holds you, and one small way to loosen it.
