Major Arcana
The Hierophant
- tradition
- guidance
- shared values
- commitment
On the card
A robed spiritual teacher wearing a triple crown sits between two grey pillars, raising a hand in blessing over two kneeling figures, with two crossed keys at his feet.
Upright
The Hierophant speaks of tradition, guidance and the values we share with others. It can point to a mentor, a community, or a formal commitment that gives life shape and meaning. It asks what you have learned from those before you, and what you want to carry forward.
Reversed
Reversed, the Hierophant can show restlessness with rules that no longer fit, or a wish to find your own way. It may also warn against being too agreeable just to keep the peace. Honour what still feels true, and gently question what doesn't.
- Love & connection
- In love, it relates to commitment, shared values and the rituals that bind two people together – whether traditional or entirely your own.
- Work & purpose
- At work, it favours learning from experienced people, established methods and teaching what you know.
- A prompt for you
- Ask yourself which tradition you want to keep, and which you are ready to outgrow.
